Unlikeable

I feel like I'm someone you either love or hate. Most people either get a really good first impression or a really bad first impression of me, then when they get to know me they either make a complete u-turn or they accept me for who I am; explosive, emotional, annoying etc.

I wish I was someone other people could count on and say "yes, that's Yvette - she's a really non-judgemental and kind person" but in reality I'm not that person, and it upsets me a little.

I think I have to reassess my actions.

Many people seem to think they know someone completely just by their Instagram, or Facebook photos, or blogposts - but seriously, do you really think you know everyone's full story?

Goal: work towards being less explosive and overreactive, and more peaceful and joyful.

Kryptonite

I think we all have that someone. That someone who is able to fix us up and make us feel so secure and special, and yet, able to tear us to shreds. Why do we let them into our lives?

Sometimes I wish you'd just leave me alone.

Hauling some books

I enjoy reading far too much. It's quite sad actually - I hardly get anytime to indulge in the outlandish whims of the book world. I also have this absurd addiction of buying too many books at once reasoning with the fact that possibly, maybe, perhaps I will find that slither of time in the hullaballoo of student-dom, resulting in the alarmingly wobbly stack of twenty or so odd books in my room all labelled 'to-be-read-and-loved'. But I digress.

A few weeks ago I made a trip to the lovely Koorong and picked up quite a few books there. I figured that I would eventually get round to reading them all, and since the trip itself takes more than 45 minutes, I might as well stock up to avoid future trips for a while.

Here is my so called book haul:

Already feeling slight tingles from the sight of books

  1. Crazy Love by Francis Chan
  2. Jesus Is ____. by Judah Smith
  3. Forgotten God by Francis Chan
  4. The Fruitful Life by Jerry Bridges
  5. Trusting God by Jerry Bridges
  6. The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges
  7. I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris
  8. Not A Fan by Kyle Idleman
Can't wait to read them, and perhaps I'll write about my feels towards them in a later post.

The start of 365

Very recently, I turned the old and ripe age of sixteen. Now, for a very long period of time, I have been wanting to start a prayer journal. A book where my collective mind clutter could be written into and my multifarious feels towards certain passages or life situations (because obviously so many life crises occur at sixteen) could be documented. And huzzah, thanks to the beautiful Angell, I have managed to score myself quite the stylish looking diary.

Oh so sleek - thank you darling!

I am now onto the sixth day of my diary writing expedition, and having never been able to make it past the third day of diary keeping in my former endeavours, I must say that this is a very grand achievement. Cue applause.

A few days ago

As mentioned above, I am planning on keeping this very much centred around God rather than self-centred; being able to project my worries and troubles onto Him and focusing on His grace, rather than concentrating on my personal shortcomings, is something I am trying to work towards. I am praying that this will allow me to learn about him more deeply, love him even more, and act more and more like him with every passing day (a big goal I know).

Today's entry

I really do hope I keep this up for the 365 days, and undoubtedly there are going to be days where I won't be able to write a page. I read a quote a few months ago that has been nagging at me though:

You "don't have time for God". Write a list of every single person you spoke to today, and put God at the bottom of it. No time you say?

Something to think about.

Sixteen about sixteen

I have mentioned in an earlier post that I turned sixteen a few weeks ago. I'm not entirely sure why, but I feel that it would be fun to write sixteen things about sixteen (and fifteen) year old me, and possibly look back on it when I'm seventeen and either a) laugh or b) die of humiliation.

Without any further ado, here are sixteen things about sixteen me:
  1. My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Elizabeth and Darcy are one of my all-time favourite couples, on par with Rapunzel and Flynn, and Barney and Robin.
  2. I am a very emotionally invested person - in every extremity there is.
  3. I 'officially' became Christian in a train station on the 10th of July last year, but I don't think I actually became Christian until March this year.
  4. The fifteenth year of my life was by far the very best and very worst year of my life, as of this point in time.
  5. I am a huge romantic - I love love, I love loving love, I love loving, I love being in love, I love seeing others in love etc.
  6. My favourite bible verses at this point in time are Romans 7:28, Philippians 2:6-8, Philippians 3:13-14, Psalm 23 and Psalm 139.
  7. I put a lot into friendships and relationships, and I more often than not get hurt by this.
  8. I trust people far too easily, and this is something I've only very recently discovered about myself.
  9. When I was younger, I used to play 5 instruments. I have since quit 3 of them.
  10. I have absolutely terrible hand-eye coordination, which is somewhat strange seeing as I don't have extremely bad body coordination.
  11. My handwriting one year ago is very very different to my handwriting now.
  12. I love reading books, especially classics.
  13. Never in a million years did my past self expect my present self to have singing as a main instrument.
  14. My zodiac is Cancer, and I have to admit that it describes me quite accurately.
  15. I find it very hard to adapt to change.
  16. I have huge admiration and respect for people who don't get swayed by what other people want or say, and who don't care about the usual teenage materialistic shenanigans, because this is something I lack quite a lot in and wish I could have more of.

lovely friends - thank you dearies!

Quick to anger

Anger is something I struggle with. It could possibly stem from the psychological aspect of my upbringing but on that I'm not too definite (and it's more likely I'm trying to blame my birth giver counterpart for my own lack of responsibility). My non-existent patience then stems from my impetuously triggered anger which then stems into feminine drama, stemming into tears, sore throats and broken friendships, and before I know it, I'm surrounded by a garden of weeds.

"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." - James 1:19-20

I feel like there have been countless times where I have read passages and not allowed them to settle into action. Yes, works don't buy faith, but as Paul says, what is faith without works? Many a time I have found myself snapping at an innocent bystander, bad mouthing someone, yelling at my mum and within the next hour, spun around and claimed that I live life in Jesus' name. Hypocrisy is something that is much too often tagged with Christianity, and it is something that is unfortunately quite present in the Christian community.

But that is the fundamental truth of it all - we will never be perfect, and that's the very reason why we need Jesus.

Standard introduction

Greetings, my dearest companions and do make yourself welcome to the humble abode of my ever so wonderful writings.

(I have attempted to use my evidently accurate Austen language as a means of introduction).

My name is Yvette.

I have begun this blog in the midst of my final year examinations, which seems to be the typical reasoning for the commencements of blogs - stressed younguns needing an outlet for their hatred towards the geometry of circles - so I will save you the eye strain of reading yet another case.

I am currently 16 years old, having reached this fantastical age of expectation only 11 days ago.

I named this blog the 'perks' of being Yvette simply because I have a renowned (and not in a good way) character trait of being exceedingly negative. Perhaps it will prod me to write more pleasantries rather than rambling rants. However, I have since been informed that the title 'perks of ___' puts me quite neatly under the 'annoying try-hard hipster indie girl' category. Oh well.

I have an extreme soft spot for the likes of Mr Darcy and the colour pink. And might I add the lantern scene of Tangled - now who can argue with the sky high like-ability factor of it. I dare you to object.

But I must admit, the deepest roots of my affection do not lie with Darcy or Flynn (many apologies), but with the most amazing, perfect, graceful, friendly, compassionate, forgiving, loving, heavenly being that has ever and will ever enter my life. Who else but Jesus?

I sincerely hope that you will continue reading my incongruent, nonsensical writings on this sorry excuse for a diary, but if you have managed to come this far down, then I suppose it's not too high of an expectation?
